March 2004

There will be a meeting in Missoula for Region Two Houndsmen to meet with FWP Personnel on March 16, 2004. Contact FWP for exact time and location.

A meeting will also be held for Region Three houndsmen in Three Forks on March 18, 2004 at 7:00 PM. It will be held at the Sacajawea Hotel in the Lewis & Clark Room. The date of March 18th may possibly be changed. Please contact Sanford Shrout at 285-6926 for confirmation.

It is getting to the time when Mountain Lion season in Montana will close for another year by the time you read this. All Hunting Districts close on April 14 each year, even if the quotas are not filled. Many Hunting Districts closed as early as December 4 again this year.

The MSHA Houndsmen joined with MT FWP to hold meetings in a couple of locations in Montana during March to discuss Lion Quotas and assist in making recommendations for the quotas for 2004-2005 Mountain Lion Hunting season. The FWP Commission will set the final quotas at their April 6 Commission meeting to be held in Bozeman, Montana. If you have concerns and read this before the commission meeting, you need to talk to your area FWP Biologist before April 6th.

It is also moving along to Field Trial time. MSHA will Montana State Houndsmen Associationhave their Spring Tune-up Field Trial near Potomac, Montana, on May 8 and 9, 2004. This year we will be having UKC Field Trial and Bench Show on Saturday, May 8th along with Open Coon and Open Cat Drags. We will have a Kids Bench Show for all the young people to earn trophies, and a Puppy Coon drag if time allows. Entry deadline for the Sunday morning $1,000-plus Blowout Cat Drag is 6:00 PM Saturday evening. The entry fee is $25.00 per dog for this race. The winner will take $1,000 (held over from last year when there was no winner) plus 75% of this year's entry fees. We will also be having Treeing contests on Sunday. There will be no water races since we may still have ice that time of year in Montana and this location does not have a pond. If you would like to come and join us, call Sanford Shrout at (406)285-6926 or myself for more information.

Our State Championship Field Trial will again be held near White Sulphur Springs, MT on June 5 & 6, 2004. This field trial is always a lot of fun and the location is great! Saturday's events will include UKC Field Trial and Bench show; Open Coon and Cat drags, Puppy Coon if time allows; Kids Bench Show and the Association annual meeting for election of officers. On Sunday, events will be a Blowout Bear Drag, Treeing Contests, UKC Water races and Open Water races.

Montana State Houndsmen Association

At each event we have competition for the youth to earn Junior Handler awards. This is open to all youth up to the age of 14. We also have High Point Dog of the Field Trial where dogs earn points for open events. These individual event points will be totaled and a High Point Dog of the Year will be honored at the end of the Fall Classic Field Trial on August 22, 2004.

Our Fall Classic Field Trial location will be set at the meeting on May 8, 2004 at the Spring Tune-up, but the dates are August 21 and 22, 2004.

Houndsmen need to step up to the plate and take an active part in MSHA. Officer elections will be June 5 at the Association Annual meeting. The current offices of President, Vice-President, and Secretary/treasurer must be new people since the current officers have served for two consecutive years. These positions are important to assisting in keeping our ability to hunt active in Montana as well as run the events MSHA holds. The elections will be for President, Vice-President, Secretary/treasurer, Asst. Secretary, Correspondent, Two Masters of Hounds, and five members of the Board of Directors.

MSHA will be having another Montana Heritage Defense Fund Raffle this year. The big prize this year will be a Montana Canvas Wall Tent with Frame. Tickets will be $2.00 each or 6 for $10.00. These tickets are available now and will be sold until August 21, 2004 when the drawing will be held during the Association Meeting that evening. If you are interested in purchasing tickets, call, write or e-mail from MSHA's website - www.montanahoundsmen.com.

We also have general raffles at each field trial. In the past years, we have had gift certificates and/or prizes donated by many organizations. Tri-Tronics, Wick Outdoor Works, Quick Track/Prowler Lites, Nite Lite, Coondog Wear, Wildlife Materials, Gallatin Meat Processing, Big R - Ranch & Home, Bob Wards & Sons, Bama Hunting Supply, Black Gold Dog food from a couple of distributors, Alberta Tree Hound Assn., and several individual contributors. I know I've forgotten a couple of contributors - please accept my apology. These organizations need our support when they support our cause with the MHDF.
